Elastos Ecosystem Terminology: A Beginner’s Guide

Over the last two years, as the Elastos Foundation has laid down Elastos’ technical infrastructure and distributed resources to Cyber Republic, a number of platforms, organizations, and processes have emerged to populate the Elastos ecosystem, producing increasingly complex and nuanced ecosystem dynamics. Now in 2020, community growth and expansion is rapidly becoming one of the ecosystem’s top priorities. However, understanding the basic functions of the Elastos ecosystem has become an arduous task, and can be daunting to those looking in. Although an indication of its rapid development and sophisticated system architecture, the growing lexicon of the Elastos ecosystem has the potential to intimidate outsiders, inhibit growth, and produce an insular environment if proper materials are not available to newcomers. While Elastos.Academy and the Elastos Developer Portal support prospective developers and tech enthusiasts seeking to familiarize themselves with Elastos, the technically unacquainted need a basic resource designed to get them up to speed. In this document, Elastos’ core technologies, significant ecosystem organizations, and relevant terminology relating to its operations and community governance model are described in an introductory glossary of sorts. This list may also serve as a reference source for any current community members that would like to refresh their fundamental understanding of Elastos or refer a friend or colleague to the project. Please note that this document covers terminology within the Elastos Foundation and Cyber Republic’s two ecosystems, but does not cover all community activity, projects, or social media accounts. 

 

(1) Technical Terminology

Elastos is best likened to an Operating System (OS) designed for the Internet – often called the Elastos Smartweb. Elastos draws on (1) core technologies called Platform Components, (2) blockchain technology, and (3) unique system architecture, all of which enable it to function differently from existing internet infrastructure. In the Modern Internet of the Elastos Smartweb, user privacy and data ownership rights are protected by default, and third parties may not access user data without consent.

Elastos Platform Components encompass the core technologies that enable the Smartweb to function differently from its established counterpart. In essence, Platform Components act to protect users via their individual and collective decentralized architectures.

Platform Components 

Hive is a tool that enables users to access and leverage decentralized storage services.

Elastos Carrier is a tool that effectively takes over all network traffic, allowing for truly private and anonymous communication between users and devices.

Decentralized Identification (DID) is a mechanism by which users and devices may identify themselves in the Elastos ecosystem in a secure manner. Because DIDs are run in a decentralized system, user identity and sensitive information is not managed or controlled by a third party, and user privacy is protected by default. DIDs are instrumental to interacting and transacting in the domain of the Smartweb, as they allow each user to establish a distinct presence, create content, and conduct secure exchange from an independent address.

The Elastos Blockchain underpins its Platform Components, recording all transactions and serving as the foremost source of decentralization in the Smartweb. For this reason, it is often said that the Smartweb is powered by blockchain.

Main Chain-Sidechain Architecture is the unique system design that enables Elastos to scale infinitely, thereby rendering the Smartweb capable of serving a global population and corresponding transaction volume. Normally, blockchains are inefficient and do not operate practically at scale; thus, Main Chain-Sidechain Architecture plays a major role in expanding the operating capacity of the SmartWeb.

The Elastos Main Chain (also called the Elastos Blockchain) is responsible only for recording transactions that take place using ELA, the Native Token of the Smartweb. Thus, the Main Chain is kept from becoming congested and inhibiting the overall performance of the Smartweb.

Sidechains operate in parallel to the Main Chain, and perform specific tasks within the Smartweb. For this reason, many dApps – that is, decentralized Applications – leverage the unique capabilities of Sidechains to carry out various processes on their behalf. Unlike the Main Chain, many Sidechains are smart contract-compatible, thus enabling them to facilitate a wide range of functions involving digital assets and online services, all while remaining connected to the Main Chain.

 

(2) Ecosystem Terminology

ELA is the native token of the Elastos Smart Web, and is used to perform actions and cover transaction fees on the Main Chain, and gas fees on its smart contract-compatible Sidechains. Internally, ELA is also used to conduct voting actions in Elastos’ DPoS Consensus and Cyber Republic Consensus (CRC), including CR Council Elections, Proposals vetoes, Council member impeachment, obtaining platform services, and so on.

dApps are decentralized Applications that utilize Elastos’ suite of Platform Components to provide any number of digital services to users, including the ability to purchase, monetize, and exchange digital assets. In addition to leveraging Platform Components, dApps may access services from Sidechains as well, and may even create their own digital assets.

Tokens and Digital Assets may be exchanged on Sidechains.

elastOS is the flagship product of Elastos and the foremost home of the Smartweb. The Elastos ecosystem refers to the greater body of organizations, individuals, and community members that occupy, constitute, develop, and operate the Elastos Smartweb and propel its growth. While the Elastos ecosystem is perpetually growing and evolving, it contains a number of primary organizations which play significant roles in its development and daily operations.

 

(3) Who We Are

The Elastos Founding Team is the original group of individuals that founded and are currently developing the Elastos Smartweb. The Elastos Founding Team currently consists of the Elastos Foundation (EF), as well as a network of decentralized teams responsible for the development of the Smartweb’s core infrastructure.

The Elastos Foundation (EF) coordinates resources, engagements, and goals shared between different teams, and mediates disputes. EF also designates funding to various teams, and manages a budget. EF is comprised of a three person board and roughly seven other employees or key decision makers.

Cyber Republic (CR) is the organization under which the community of the Elastos ecosystem self-organizes, makes collective, democratic decisions, and conducts self-governance. CR operates through the processes of Cyber Republic Consensus (CRC). CR also refers to the collection of individuals and organizations that make up the Elastos community.

Cyber Republic Consensus (CRC) is a series of rules and procedures by which the community of the Elastos ecosystem self-organizes to coordinate decisions and expend funds allocated to ecosystem development. In effect, it is CR – not EF – that is directing and guiding the outward expansion of the Elastos ecosystem and shaping its internal landscape.

The CR Council (NOT to be abbreviated “CRC”) is the elected group of 12 individuals that votes on decisions related to the operations, evolution of, and funds allocation in the Elastos ecosystem. The CR Council is elected by a vote of community members, where each ELA is worth 1 vote. To learn more about CR, visit cyberrepublic.org.

Proposals are the official, documented changes and funding allocations that are to be voted upon by the CR Council. Proposals can only be passed if they receive a majority vote from the CR Council. Suggestions are initial ideas that may potentially become Proposals in the future. Only a CR Council member may transition a Suggestion into a Proposal; however, anyone in the Elastos ecosystem may submit a Suggestion. To explore current and past Suggestions, visit cyberrepublic.org/suggestion.

The Secretary-General of CR is elected by the CR Council to take on the responsibility of managing various aspects of the Proposal Tracking process and ensure smooth operations throughout the processes of CRC. The Secretary General of CR also forms the CR Secretariat to support him or her in fulfilling relevant responsibilities. The inaugural CR Council will be elected and begin its term in late May 2020. elastos.org is the main communication hub for the Elastos Foundation. elastos.org features links to prominent Elastos Foundation resources, such as its wallets, roadmap, and whitepapers, as well as its network of decentralized teams and the official Elastos Blog, from which the Elastos Foundation releases tech announcements to its community. @Cyber_Republic is the official Twitter handle of the Cyber Republic community. It is managed by community members, and operates independently of the Elastos Foundations and its social media presence, releasing a wide array of community articles, interviews, and news events.

There is also a robust global community of enthusiasts and developers alike that can be found on social media platforms across the world. While these communities are self-managed and not officially part of The Elastos Foundation, they represent the greater community, its decentralized nature, and ultimately, the future of the SmartWeb and Cyber Republic.
